OVERVIEW
EXTERIOR COLOURS:

The Sausalito residence sits nestled amongst trees and vegetation on a hillside facing the San Francisco Bay. Nothing of the existing colour was to be retained after the renovation. How did we want to building to look in its natural setting and how could we use colour to do full justice to the beautiful renovation?

A complex, neutralized yellow acrylic coat was ultimately chosen to cover the stucco. It works in harmony with the greens of the surrounding vegetation as well as with the stone facade. The colour is light and cheerful and one that offers strong contrast with the dark bronze trim.

INTERIOR COLOURS:

The interior space required colour choices throughout. The main level, an open plan space, contains the kitchen, dining room, living room and two of the major stairways. While the client wanted each room to have its own character, it was important to consider that these rooms all share a space - one or more of the other rooms is always fully visible from each location. Additionally, the space is large and full of windows looking out to the Bay.

Hallways and stairways tended to lack natural light. And single walls would lead from one lighting environment to an entirely different one, challenging each colour choice to be very thoughtfully considered. The master bedroom needed to be calm and cozy, and the bedrooms belonging to the 2 young boys were an opportunity to have a lot of brightly-coloured fun.
